Aging-In-Place Upgrades

Home Projects and Renovations are the perfect time to consider aging-in-home needs. We have developed a comprehensive checklist and have incorporated it in our home improvement process. It starts by having a thoughtful discussion with you about current or desired living-assistance needs. Below are some of the common items discussed.

Safety

Improve Lighting – Add brighter LED lights, motion-sensor lights, and nightlights in hallways.

Reduce Tripping Hazards – Secure or remove loose rugs, cords, and furniture with sharp corners.

Anti-Scald Water Controls  – Prevents burns from hot water fluctuations.

Non-Slip Flooring – Ensure smooth, slip-resistant surfaces.

Emergency Alert Systems – Install medical alert buttons.

Bathroom

Grab Bars – In bathrooms, near toilets, and in the shower/tub.

Walk-In Shower or Tub – Reduces the risk of falls when stepping over tub edges.

Handheld Showerhead – Offers easier bathing with more control.

Raised Toilet Seat – Reduces strain on knees and joints when sitting or standing.

Shower Bench or Chair – Allows for safe, seated bathing.

Accessbility

Stair Lifts – If a home has multiple levels, a stair lift can be essential.

Install Ramps – Replace steps with ramps for easier wheelchair and walker access.

Widen Doorways – For wheelchair or walker access doorways should be at least 32 inches wide.

Lower Countertops & Cabinets – Ensure easy reach in kitchens and bathrooms.

Lever-Style Door Handles & Faucets – Easier to operate than traditional knobs.

Living Spaces

Adjustable Bed – Helps with circulation and getting in/out of bed.

Recliners with Lift Assist – Makes sitting and standing up easier.

Extended Handrails – Provide grip for both interior and exterior steps.

Raised washer and dryer – Reduce bending and make usage more ergonomic.

Kitchen

Pull-Out Shelves & Lazy Susans – Makes storage more accessible.

Induction Cooktop – Reduces burn risks as it only heats when cookware is present.

Automatic Shutoff Features – For stoves, ovens, and other appliances.

Side-Opening Oven Doors – Easier access without reaching over a hot surface.

Touch or Voice-Controlled Appliances – Easier operation for those with arthritis or mobility limitations.

Technology

Emergency & Health Monitoring – Wearable fall detection, smart pill dispensers, remote health monitoring.

Smart Assistants & Voice Control – Garage door opener, Smart TVs, lighting, and other voice activated / mobility control home items.

Home Security & Safety – Home Locks, Security Cameras, Smart Doorbells, Motion Sensor alerts and lighting.

Mobility & Accessibility Aids – Automated window blinds, garage door openers, robotic cleaners.
